<p>In this tutorial, you will find how to create a waving flag vector using illustrator. A Turkish flag will be drawn as an example. Dimensions are chosen with some sense of proportion. You can follow the instructions below and see how to use some illustrator commands.</p>

<p>The main objectives are:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Drawing star and crescent shapes</li><li>Creating wavy background</li><li>Copying star and crescent to background</li><li>Making some improvements. And conclusion</li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make a wavy flag in illustrator</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Drawing star and Crescent </h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="987" height="729" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/crescent-and-star-shape.jpg" alt="how to create crescent and star shape in illustrator" class="wp-image-1394" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/crescent-and-star-shape.jpg 987w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/crescent-and-star-shape-300x222.jpg 300w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/crescent-and-star-shape-768x567.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 987px) 100vw, 987px" /></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Draw two circles and a star. Make sure the small circle (2) should be in front of other circle (circle 1).&nbsp; If you draw circles using the ellipse tool use <strong>ALT/OPT&nbsp; + Shift</strong> key to make a perfect circle. You can also give dimensions by clicking on the artboard using the<strong> ellipse tool (L)</strong>. </li><li>Use the&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Star tool</strong> to draw a star and make a perfect star with <strong>ALT/OPT </strong>key on the keyboard.</li><li>Select both circles (1 and 2) open Pathfinder panel ( CTRL + SHIFT + F9) and apply minus front command. This will create a crescent shape. </li><li>Select all objects on the artboard using CTRL/CMD + A make fill color white with no stroke.&nbsp;Crescent and star shapes are ready. </li><li>While the shapes are selected, drag them using left mouse click and drop them in the symbol palette. You don’t need to make any changes in the <strong>Symbol Options</strong> dialog window. </li><li>Hit Ok.</li><li> If you see your shape in the symbol palette you can delete the objects in the artboard.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="420" height="283" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-symbol-palette.jpg" alt="illustrator symbol palette" class="wp-image-1388" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-symbol-palette.jpg 420w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-symbol-palette-300x202.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Creating a wavy background</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Create a vertical line in the artboard. Make stroke length 1 pt. stroke color Red and remove fill color if any. The length of the line I draw is 200 px.</li><li>select the line and apply <strong>&nbsp;Effect &gt; Distort &amp; Transform &gt; Roughen</strong></li><li>When the dialog box opens select %5 size, 4 for Detail, and thick smooth. The wavy shape is created randomly. Therefore you may have a different shape than you see here.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="729" height="516" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-roughen-effect-option.jpg" alt="illustrator roughen effect option" class="wp-image-1387" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-roughen-effect-option.jpg 729w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-roughen-effect-option-300x212.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px" /></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>To make a 3d effect select the line and go to the <strong>Effect &gt; 3d &gt; Extrude &amp; Bevel. </strong>&nbsp;</li><li>Give the below values below to make the 3d effect.&nbsp;You can also make your own settings. </li><li>If you want the flag to appear matte, please change the surface option to &#8220;<strong>diffuse shading</strong>&#8220;. Before you hit ok make following steps to place your crescent and star shapes on the waved surface.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="761" height="639" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-3d-extrude-dialog-box.jpg" alt="illustrator 3d extrude dialog box" class="wp-image-1384" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-3d-extrude-dialog-box.jpg 761w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-3d-extrude-dialog-box-300x252.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px" /></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Click the <strong>Map Art </strong>button in the dialog box. As you see a new dialog box will be open.</li><li>Choose the surface to be placed shapes from the top right section. You may have 4 or 5 sections here depends on your line shape. </li><li>select your symbol from the Symbols drop-down menu. Make appropriate modifications of the shape you place at the corners. You can rotate and resize the shape.</li><li>check thick box of the <strong>&nbsp;Shade artwork </strong>to apply tints and shades of the surface to the symbol you placed.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="820" height="626" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-map-art-options.jpg" alt="illustrator map art options" class="wp-image-1386" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-map-art-options.jpg 820w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-map-art-options-300x229.jpg 300w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-map-art-options-768x586.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" /></figure>

<p>If you applied the steps above you should have a similar image of the below vector.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="845" height="848" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector-.jpg" alt="How to draw Turkish flag using illustrator" class="wp-image-1392" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector-.jpg 845w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector--150x150.jpg 150w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector--300x300.jpg 300w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector--768x771.jpg 768w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector--270x270.jpg 270w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector--230x230.jpg 230w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-Flag-wave-vector--45x45.jpg 45w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Applying perspective to flag</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>create a rectangle to cover Crescent and star shapes. Select them all and go to the<strong> Object &gt; Clipping Mask &gt; Make.</strong> This will produce a rectangular flag.</li><li>Let’s give a wave effect to the sides of the object to make a more natural look. goto Warp Tool in the tools panel.</li><li> If you double-click the icon Options dialog box opens. You may play with these numbers. I suggest you not to change now. </li><li>You can decrease and increase the size of the tool by holding down the Right mouse button and moving the mouse forward and backward. </li><li>Hold down ALT and Shift keys to make perfect resize. Use this tool to deform the side of the rectangle. I suggest you lock 3d effect applied red line not to accidentally modify with the warp tool.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="827" height="711" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-warp-tool-dialog-box.jpg" alt="illustrator warp tool dialog box" class="wp-image-1389" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-warp-tool-dialog-box.jpg 827w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-warp-tool-dialog-box-300x258.jpg 300w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-warp-tool-dialog-box-768x660.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 827px) 100vw, 827px" /></figure>

<p>you should now have a similar shape to this:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="699" height="503" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-flag-vector-illustration-pinterest.jpg" alt="Turkish flag vector illustration pinterest" class="wp-image-1391" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-flag-vector-illustration-pinterest.jpg 699w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Turkish-flag-vector-illustration-pinterest-300x216.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 699px) 100vw, 699px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Some improvement</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>The final step is to use <strong>object &gt;Envelop Distort &gt; Make with warp </strong>Command. This will make your flag even more natural-looking. </li><li>Select the <strong>flag</strong> shape from the Style menu in the <strong>Warp options</strong> panel. You may change the values according to your preview. </li><li>If your crescent and star shapes are not good looking you can change their placement by selecting your red line from the layers panel. Use the appearance panel to modify 3d effect and make changes as we did earlier</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="562" height="452" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-envelop-distort-warp-options.jpg" alt="illustrator envelop distort warp options" class="wp-image-1385" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-envelop-distort-warp-options.jpg 562w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/illustrator-envelop-distort-warp-options-300x241.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px" /></figure>

<p><strong>This is the final flag vector created:</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="698" height="566" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Wavy-Turkish-Flag-pinterest-crescent-star.jpg" alt="Wavy Turkish Flag vector pinterest crescent star" class="wp-image-1393" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Wavy-Turkish-Flag-pinterest-crescent-star.jpg 698w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Wavy-Turkish-Flag-pinterest-crescent-star-300x243.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px" /></figure>

<p>This explains how to delete objects outside the Illustrator artboard. Also, the export methods of your vector drawing are shown. You can export your file as a raster image or vector file using these methods. Therefore this article not only shows removing drawings outside of artboard but also save as jpeg file.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">What do you want to do?</h5>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><a href="#Target1">I would like to remove everything outside of the artboard and save as a vector file.</a></li>

<li><a href="#Target2">I would like to remove everything outside of the artboard and export as a raster image.</a></li>

<li><a href="#Target3">I would like to resize my artboard to the size of my vector drawing.</a></li>
</ul>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><a name="Target1"></a>Crop your vector using Pathfinder to remove outside of the boundary</h5>

<p>In order to crop your vector drawings, place all your objects in the same layer.<br><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-934" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Crop-an-image.jpg" alt="Crop images" width="365" height="268" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Crop-an-image.jpg 603w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Crop-an-image-300x220.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px" /></p>

<p>Create a rectangle in front of the objects.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignleft"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="348" height="219" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Patfinder-crop.jpg" alt="Pathfinder crop command" class="wp-image-935" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Patfinder-crop.jpg 348w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Patfinder-crop-300x189.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="496" height="265" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/croped-image.jpg" alt="Croped image" class="wp-image-936" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/croped-image.jpg 496w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/croped-image-300x160.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px" /></figure>

<p>Select them all and use “crop” command in the Pathfinder panel.</p>

<p>Be careful, this command will divide all your objects into many parts. It may be difficult to re-edit your file later.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Use Layer Clipping Mask</h5>

<p>If you still want to crop your objects without deformation, you need to use one of the masking options. Either you can use a clipping mask, opacity mask or layer clipping mask. Each of them has different results.</p>

<p>Most people use the layer clipping mask to visually crop vectors to the artboard.</p>
<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>
<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-7979870217105595"
     data-ad-slot="3851895469"></ins>
<script>
     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>

<p>Create a rectangle up to the size of the artboard in the same layer with your objects. Bring it to the front if not.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="498" height="363" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Layer-Mask.jpg" alt="Layer Mask" class="wp-image-937" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Layer-Mask.jpg 498w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Layer-Mask-300x219.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px" /></figure>

<p>Click on the layer name and Click layer clipping mask icon. &nbsp;Using layer clipping mask will not actually crop your vector drawings. It will only hide places outside of the boundaries of the artboard. &nbsp;When you export without restraining to the artboard size, all your drawings will be visible in your raster image file.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><a name="Target2"></a> Export</h5>

<p><span style="color: #800000;"><strong>How do I export just the artboard in Illustrator?</strong></span></p>

<p>Sometimes you need to export your vector drawings into raster images. Especially when you want to use your drawings for a web page, you should export your ai file to a jpg image. In the normal case, I mean if all of your drawings are inside of the artboard, you can easily export your file to a jpg. On the other hand, when your drawings exceed the boundary of the artboard, the ordinary export command will result in exporting all the drawings you have in your file regardless of your artboard size.</p>

<p>As for exporting only what is inside of the artboard to a jpg file, you have three commands under the file&gt;export menu.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Export for screens</li>

<li>Export As.</li>

<li>Save for web</li>
</ul>

<p>If you just want to export your artboard, you can use one of all three options.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1001" height="650" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Asset-4-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-938" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Asset-4-1.jpg 1001w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Asset-4-1-300x195.jpg 300w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Asset-4-1-768x499.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px" /></figure>

<p>It is very obvious what to do if you use “<strong><span style="color: #800000;">Export for screens</span></strong>” option.&nbsp; Just select the artboard to be exported (1). Define the quality of the file if you like(2). And click export artboard button(3).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="765" height="616" src="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Export-as.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-939" srcset="https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Export-as.jpg 765w, https://illustratordersleri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Export-as-300x242.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px" /></figure>

<p>If you decide to use “<span style="color: #800000;"><strong>Export As..</strong></span> “ option, select the file type you require (1) and make sure to thick “use artboard” checkbox (2). Then Export (3)</p>

<p>Finally, when you decide to use “<strong><span style="color: #800000;">S</span><span style="color: #800000;">ave for web</span><span style="color: #800000;">s</span></strong>” option, make sure “clip to artboard” checkbox is checked.</p>

<p>Please note that this information is valid for Adobe Illustrator CC. If you use an older version of the illustrator, the menus may have different options.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-css-opacity"/>
