Neon light is a popular method used in illuminated signage construction. You can create a neon effect for both text and shapes in Illustrator. If you want to add a neon light effect to your drawings, simply follow the steps outlined here. Since this is an advanced-level tutorial, we won’t cover how to draw simple objects.

Step 1. create the shape

For the neon effect, it is necessary to create a black background first. The black background makes the effect appear clear. Create a canvas-sized rectangle for the black background. After that, place it to cover the work area and lock it with the ” object> Lock ” command while the rectangle is selected.

Create a circle 400 x 400 px dimensions and stroke weight of 20 pt .

Step 2. Define the base color

If the circle you create has a fill color, delete it. Set the stroke color to RGB Magenta (magenta purple).

Double click the RGB magenta color tile to make a global color definition. Check the global box in the swatch options dialog box.

You define the color as “global” because you can then easily change the color of the circle using that color’s tints.

If you define a color as global, a white triangle appears in the lower right corner of the color box. This triangle mark shows on the base color and all of its tints. To see which tints are set as global, simply use the Window > Color Guide panel.

Step 3. Apply Effects

The color tints of the magenta color should be selected from the global tones in the ” color guide ” panel. Therefore, ” appearance panel ” and ” color guide panel ” should be open in the workspace .

Now, make sure the circle you draw is selected. In the appearance panel, you should see a magenta color and 20pt thick stroke. Select it with the mouse (1) and change the color of the stroke with the lightest tone (2) in the color guide panel.

Apply the 1 px “gaussian blur” effect to the selected line using the “fx” icon in the Appeararence panel.

The “gaussian blur” effect should appear under the stroke line, as seen in the appearance panel below.

Create 3 copies of “stroke with gaussian blur”. You can copy it by dragging the stroke with ALT + Left mouse button and dropping just below it.

Change the created stroke thicknesses to 30, 50 and 70. Choose the colors below in the color guide panel.

Finally change the “Gaussian blur” effect values for each stroke.

> Gaussian blur value for Stroke 20: 1
> Gaussian blur value for Stroke 30 Value: 5
> Gaussian blur value for Stroke 50: 15
> Gaussian blur value for Stroke 70: 85

You should have a drawing like the one below.

As you can see, the resulting brightness effect is terminated in a square shape. This view is due to the border that the illustrator software applies around objects while creating a raster effect. To increase the limit, open the dialog box with effect> raster effect settings . Increase the pixel value in the window. I changed it to 160.

The result is:

You can apply the neon effect to text in the same way,

Don’t forget to comment and share. Have a good time.

In this tutorial, you will find how to create a waving flag vector using illustrator. A Turkish flag will be drawn as an example. Dimensions are chosen with some sense of proportion. You can follow the instructions below and see how to use some illustrator commands.

The main objectives are:

Drawing star and crescent shapes

Creating wavy background

Copying star and crescent to background

Making some improvements. And conclusion

How to make a wavy flag in illustrator

Drawing star and Crescent

Draw two circles and a star. Make sure the small circle (2) should be in front of other circle (circle 1). If you draw circles using the ellipse tool use ALT/OPT + Shift key to make a perfect circle. You can also give dimensions by clicking on the artboard using the ellipse tool (L).

Use the Star tool to draw a star and make a perfect star with ALT/OPT key on the keyboard.

Select both circles (1 and 2) open Pathfinder panel ( CTRL + SHIFT + F9) and apply minus front command. This will create a crescent shape.

Select all objects on the artboard using CTRL/CMD + A make fill color white with no stroke. Crescent and star shapes are ready.

While the shapes are selected, drag them using left mouse click and drop them in the symbol palette. You don’t need to make any changes in the Symbol Options dialog window.

Hit Ok.

If you see your shape in the symbol palette you can delete the objects in the artboard.

Creating a wavy background

Create a vertical line in the artboard. Make stroke length 1 pt. stroke color Red and remove fill color if any. The length of the line I draw is 200 px.

select the line and apply Effect > Distort & Transform > Roughen

When the dialog box opens select %5 size, 4 for Detail, and thick smooth. The wavy shape is created randomly. Therefore you may have a different shape than you see here.

To make a 3d effect select the line and go to the Effect > 3d > Extrude & Bevel.

Give the below values below to make the 3d effect. You can also make your own settings.

If you want the flag to appear matte, please change the surface option to “diffuse shading“. Before you hit ok make following steps to place your crescent and star shapes on the waved surface.

Click the Map Art button in the dialog box. As you see a new dialog box will be open.

Choose the surface to be placed shapes from the top right section.
If you applied the steps above you should have a similar image of the below vector.

Applying perspective to flag

create a rectangle to cover Crescent and star shapes. Select them all and go to the Object > Clipping Mask > Make. This will produce a rectangular flag.

Let’s give a wave effect to the sides of the object to make a more natural look. goto Warp Tool in the tools panel.

If you double-click the icon Options dialog box opens. You may play with these numbers. I suggest you not to change now.

You can decrease and increase the size of the tool by holding down the Right mouse button and moving the mouse forward and backward.

Hold down ALT and Shift keys to make perfect resize. Use this tool to deform the side of the rectangle. I suggest you lock 3d effect applied red line not to accidentally modify with the warp tool.

you should now have a similar shape to this:

Some improvement

The final step is to use object >Envelop Distort > Make with warp Command. This will make your flag even more natural-looking.

Select the flag shape from the Style menu in the Warp options panel. You may change the values according to your preview.

If your crescent and star shapes are not good looking you can change their placement by selecting your red line from the layers panel. Use the appearance panel to modify 3d effect and make changes as we did earlier

This tutorial shows you how to draw coil spring vector in illustrator. Additionally, spring vector is designed for use as a pattern brush. You can easily apply to any path of objects.

What is a coil spring?

A coil spring is a mechanical device which stores energy and releases it. The shape of this device is similar to a metal wire wrapped around a cylinder. Therefore it is sometimes called helical spring. There are many types of springs in mechanical engineering. Here I focused only on the shape of the device and described the steps of drawing coil spring.

How to draw coil spring?

Step 1: Select the Line Segment Tool (L) and click somewhere in the newly created artboard. When the dialog box open, give the length 200 and 0 (Zero) for angle value. You will have a horizontally aligned line. If required use zoom tool or CTRL + + to zoom in to your new line.

Step 2: while the line is selected run the Zig Zag command. Effect > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag. Set the size of the effect 50px, Absolute, 4 Ridges per segment and smooth options in the dialog box. Hit Ok if all set.

Distort transform and Zig zag effect menu

Step 3: Make stroke thickness 30pt and expand your shape using Object > Expand Appearance. You get the vector like this:

Sin wave

Step 4: Cut the line from anchor points shown below. Use Direct selection tool to select the anchors and run Cut path command as shown.

Cut path

Step 5: Now select the two paths using Selection Tool (V) and SHIFT + Left mouse button as shown below. Bring them to the front (Object > Arrange > Bring to Front)

select two objects to bring them front

Step 6: Select All paths (CTRL/CMD + A) make round cap using stroke panel. Expand your strokes only, going to Object > Expand command.

Stroke panel

Step 7: Change the colors of objects as shown. You can choose any color.

coil spring colors

The coil spring base shape is ready. Now let’s make a brush from this shape. You need to make sure that when the objects copied sequentially, they should stick together without any gap and should be seamless. Therefore:

Step 8: Crop your coil spring using rectangle tool as shown below. To make precise alignment make sure only the Snap to point is open. Turn off other snaps if open. Select your objects and use Crop command in the Pathfinder panel.

coil spring base shape

Choose Pattern Brush from the menu and hit ok.

Step 10: No need to make any other changes in the options panel. Just hit ok.

Here, you will find how to draw an Archimedean spiral in Illustrator. A linear or Archimedes spiral can be drawn using the twist effect. Please follow the instructions to see how to draw a spiral.

Step 1: Create a brand new 1000 X 1000 px artboard.

Step 2: Select the Line Segment tool and click anywhere on the artboard. When the dialog box opens, give 800 px length and 0 (zero) degree angle to create a line.

Line segment tool dialog box

Step 3: Align this line with the artboard. Align horizontally and vertically centered.

Step 4: While the line is selected, go to the menu bar and choose Effect > Distort & Transform > Twist.

Step 5: In the Twist dialog box, set the angle value to 360 if you want a single turn. if you want 3 turns, set angle value to 360 * 3. And so on.. Here, let’s make 3 turns. And hit ok. Your shape should be like this:

Linear spiral

Note that the straight lines of the outer section of the spiral can be smoothed using the Path simplify command. Another way to make smooth lines to give the same effect twice. i.e., instead of making 360 * 4 degrees, apply the twist effect 360 * 2 two times. Anyways, to apply the path simplify command, please follow the instructions below.

Step 6: First expand your straight line by going to Object > Expand Appearance comma</p>

The mandala design template is the key to this article. This tutorial focuses on drawing a mandala art using Adobe Illustrator. The main goal of this article is to show how to prepare a Mandala Template for adobe illustrator. Once you set up your document, it will act like a Mandala Plugin.

Create Layers

The bottom layer will be your guide layer. Therefore named it as “Guides”. The other layer names refer to how many copies of the object created. “odd 12” means to make 11 copies of the object. “Even 12” means to reflect the object and make 11 copies of them. At this time these are just names. After applying effects to layers, objects created in the corresponding layer will be either circularly copied or reflected and copied.

Layers in illustrator

Create a Guide

To create guides, you need to show up your ruler first. Hit CTRL/CMD + R on the keyboard. And then, Left Mouse in the ruler area. Drag the guide and drop it to the artboard.

Align to artboard
